Cabbage Aphid
Overview
The Cabbage Aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) affects many types of brassicas, including canola.
Cabbage Aphids have a grey-green colour and a dense white powder covers their colonies.
They tolerate cold temperatures better than most aphids and are most active during later winter and early spring. They persist among cruciferous weeds such as mustard, wild turnip and wild radish.
Why you need to control Cabbage Aphid
Heavy Cabbage Aphid infestations reduce plant growth, cover saleable parts of crops with honeydew and sooty mould, and eventually will lead to plant death. Cabbage Aphids are also vectors of some plant viruses.
Beneficial predators to control Cabbage Aphid among crops
Biological Services has products to control Cabbage Aphid in your crops and can advise you on their use.
Many naturally occurring aphid predators and parasitic wasps can provide effective control. Diaeretiella rapae (Diaeretiella) is particularly effective against the cabbage aphid and generalist aphid predators can provide relief at hotspots.
