James Altmann

Director, Biological Services

James Altmann is a member of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (AIAST) and is an accredited Certified Practising Agriculturalist (CPAg) by the Australian Register of Agricultural Consultants.

Since taking over Biological Services in 1987 with his wife, Simone, James has been integral to the evolution of Biological Services from a producer of a single biocontrol for Red Scale in citrus to being an IPM leader that gives solutions to indoor and outdoor growers across a wide range of crops.

James’ professional achievements include his work as a founding director of Fruit Doctors Pty Ltd from 1993, where he provided a wide range of horticultural production advice to growers of citrus, wine and table grapes, almonds, pome fruit, stone fruit and avocados. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1992 to study mass rearing of bio-control agents in USA/Canada and in 1997, was presented the Les Baker Citrus Industry Award from Australian Citrus Growers Inc. for his services to growers and the industry.

James is joint owner of Belair Orchards, a 40-hectare fruit property in Loxton growing several citrus varieties, avocados, wine grapes and some vegetables and greenhouse crops. Naturally, he practices Integrated Pest Management and regularly invites growers to his Loxton property to demonstrate the benefits of sustainable production in action.
