Hypo Mix
Overview
Hypo Mix is a combination of two soil-dwelling predatory mites: Hypoaspis miles (Stratiolaeleps scimitus) and Hypoaspis aculeifer. It assists in preventative control of Fungus Gnat and helps to control thrips by attacking thrips pupae in the soil.
Suitable crops include nurseries (for propagation, bedding plants, and new pots), vegetables (capsicum, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumber), ornamentals (gerbera, orchids, begonia, chrysanthemum, rose, poinsettia, cyclamen), and herbs.
Hypo Mix is primarily used in greenhouse production but can also be used in field crops such as strawberries to restore beneficial activity after soil fumigation.
The predators are harmless to plants and people.
Pests Hypo Mix can help you control
You can use Hypo Mix to control Fungus Gnat (Sciarid Flies), and the pupae of Western Flower Thrips and Onion Thrips.
How Hypo Mix controls pests among crops
Hypoaspis miles and Hypoaspis aculeifer target the eggs and larvae of the pests and also help reduce thrips populations by feeding on pupae in the soil.
Hypo Mix is also useful for controlling Fungus Gnat in soil and growing media. While the mix is not sufficient to control thrips on its own, it can be very important when used with Orius tantillus, Neoseiulus cucumeris, Typhlodromips montdorensis and Franklinothrips vespiformis which target thrips in the plant canopy.
Certain pesticides and fungicides affect the predactors in Hypo Mix so contact your local Biological Services consultant for specific advice.
How you can order Hypo Mix
You can order Hypo Mix from Biological Services as loose material in 1 or 1.5 litre containers at 30,000 mites/litre.
