Snakes & reptiles

Overview

Australia is home to many kinds of reptiles and snakes. These are on display for the public at wildlife sanctuaries and zoos. Some snake and reptile species are popular pets. Snake mites (Ophionyssus natricis) are parasitic mites commonly found on snakes, but also occurring on captive lizards, turtles, crocodiles, and other reptiles.

Signs you have Snakes & reptiles pests

Mites may be seen crawling on the skin of the snake or reptile. Feeding causes the bodies of the mites to be engorged with blood and fluids from the reptile.

Clinical signs of mite feeding include anorexia, depression, frequent rubbing against cage furniture, increased sloughing, and prolonged soaking in the water bowl. With heavy infections anaemia can occur.
