Onions
Overview
Onions are a kitchen staple, popular for their taste, versatility and health benefits.
Nearly half of Australia’s onion production occurs in South Australia. Around 80 per cent of onions grown in Australia are brown onions. Red and white onions, shallots and spring onions make up the rest.
Onion Thrips (Thrips tabaci) is a serious pest of onions. It can cause problems during the growing and storage phases. Red onions are particularly sensitive to Onion Thrips damage during storage.
In 2007 the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) conclusively found that Neoseiulus cucumeris (Cucumeris) provided excellent and cost-effective control of Onion Thrips in stored red onions.
