Committed to progress
Innovation through research and development has been key to Biological Services’ position at the forefront of IPM in Australia.
Our pioneering spirit is the reason we have Australia’s biggest range of biological controls for many of the key pests in horticulture today.
Research and Development, quality management and continuous improvement go hand in hand and are daily disciplines.
We constantly review our practices and procedures for every beneficial we produce, from adjusting temperatures and humidity to trialling new plants or diets for the insect cultures.
Developing new products
When it comes to introducing a new biocontrol for commercial crops, our research and development process can take several years to complete.
Step 1: We identify a key pest problem. If the pest and crop is extensive enough, we commit to further research.
Step 2: We search the literature and speak with our local and international network to find out if any predators or parasites have potential to attack the pest.
Step 3: We then consider a range of feasibility conditions, such as whether the biocontrol agents already exist in Australia, if it is effective enough on the target pest, and if we have the resources and capacity to rear them in the required quantities to be commercially viable.
Step 4: If our conditions are met, our next step is to initiate cultures to trial how well the new organisms can be reared.
Step 5: If we still have a viable option, our next step is trials to determine how to harvest them separately from the pest or prey and how they will be packaged, shipped and released by the grower.
Innovation in Packaging
The products we sell are alive, supplied as eggs, larvae or adult insects/mites.
This is why we place great emphasis on packaging in our research and development program, and we are proud of the significant innovations our Biological Services team continues to make.
Our packaging allows beneficials to breathe and remain in healthy during transit – optimum temperature, nourishment and hydration – so you receive them in excellent condition.
Also front of mind is grower convenience. Many of our products are supplied in different forms to suit grower preferences, crops and growing conditions of indoor and outdoor farms.
Stringent Quality Control
Biological Services has an unwavering commitment to quality.
We have worked hard to establish our reputation in Australia for the excellent condition and reliability of our beneficials and IPM programs.
We adopt strict quality control practices over and above IOBC guidelines and have dedicated QC staff to ensure our products are pure and at the right concentrations when shipped to you.
From new product experiments and trials to supply and shipping, quality control is a founding pillar of our business model.
