Chickens
Overview
Chicken meat is a significant part of the modern Australian diet and consumption has doubled in the past 30 years.
It has grown in popularity due to its increased health benefits and lower cost compared to red meats. Chickens are also raised for egg production.
The Chicken Mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) is a parasite that occurs worldwide and can infest both domestic and wild bird species. Also known as Poultry Red Mite, Red Fowl Mite, Red Poultry Mite and Roost Mite, Chicken Mite mainly affects laying hens. Their life cycle, from egg to adult, is 7 days.
Chicken Mite is more active during the summer months and more prevalent in warmer climates.
Signs you have Chickens pests
Chicken Mite infestations lead to frequent scratching and reduce the condition of feathers and overall bird vitality. In severe cases, it can cause anemia due to blood loss from mite feeding and a drop in egg production.
Products you can use to control Chickens pests
Biological Services produces Hypoaspis aculeifer (Hypoaspis) to control Chicken Mite in nesting cages or enclosures.
Other tips for managing pests in your Chickens
Mites feed on chickens at night and hide in cracks, under perches, and nest boxes during the day so good coop hygiene is critical.
Quarantine birds for 14 days before introducing them to your existing flock.
